AFI Regional Aviation Week Kicks Off in Abuja – By Daisy BARRO

Aviation professionals and technocrats have converged this day in Abuja for the African-Indian Ocean (AFI) Aviation week. The week-long event which brings together the leadership of air transport regulatory authorities from AFI Regional members and other aviation bigwigs from the international community is a platform for invigorating dialogue centered on ways to enhance aviation in Africa.
The event, which is jointly organized by Nigeria’s Ministry of Aviation, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization, Montreal, Canada, is expected to attract high profile aviation professionals such as His Excellency Salvatore Sciacchitano, President of Council, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO); Hadi Sirika, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation; Captain Musa Nuhu, Director General (DG), NCAA; Air Cdre Kwame Mamphey, President, African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) amongst others.
According to a statement by NCAA, the conference will provide the opportunity for the Directors-General to “chart a course aimed at further developing the appropriate strategies while providing the necessary actions to support the enhancement of the aviation system in Africa.”
The statement goes on to divulge the main issues on the agenda which are: level of progress attained in the implementation of ICAO’s regional and global plan; COVID-19 aviation recovery; enhancement of aviation performance in all ICAO strategic objectives; the outcome of ICAO High-Level Conference on COVID-19 (HLCC) 2021 amongst others.
According to NCAA’s General Manager, Public Relations, Mr. Sam Adurogboye, the week-long event will also cover the Ninth Meeting of the AFI Directors-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA/9); the Eleventh Meeting of the Steering Committee of the Comprehensive Regional Implementation Plan for Aviation Security and Facilitation in Africa (AFI SECFAL Plan); the Twenty-Fifth Meeting of the Steering Committee of the Comprehensive Regional Implementation Plan for Aviation Safety in Africa (AFI Plan) and an aviation symposium.
