In a strategic move to consolidate its position in the African market, South African Airways (SAA) has announced a significant increase in flight frequencies to key destinations on the continent, effective November 2024.
South Africa’s national carrier will boost its weekly flights to Harare and Lusaka from ten (10) to twelve (12), while flights to Lagos and Accra will rise from three (3) to four (4) times a week. SAA’s presence in the Democratic Republic of Congo will also be enhanced with five (5) weekly flights to Kinshasa.
Domestically, SAA is set to increase its flight frequency to Gqeberha to three (3) times daily.
According to Interim CEO Professor John Lamola, the expansion is driven by demand and feasibility, aligning with SAA’s mandate to support South Africa’s economic growth. In his own words, “Air travel plays a vital role in fostering tourism and trade links across Africa, benefiting both South Africa and the continent,” Lamola stated.
SAA will also increase flights to Mauritius to twice daily from December 2024, coinciding with the peak holiday season. Flights to Perth, a popular destination for South Africans, will rise to five (5) times a week from January 7, 2025.
This expansion marks a significant step in the airline’s growth strategy, reinforcing its commitment to connecting Africa and supporting regional economic development.
