African Airlines Association (AFRAA) and Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate closely towards the improvement of air transport safety on the African continent.
The MoU was signed by AFRAA’s Secretary General (SG), Abderrahmané Berthé and the President/Chief Executive Officer, FSF, Dr. Shahidi, at the Aviation Africa conference in Kigali, Rwanda on September 12, 2022.
According to the terms of the MoU, AFRAA and FSF are to work together to improve aviation safety by championing the sharing of relevant safety information; developing suitable resource material for each other; organizing joint technical workshops etc.
Commenting on the newly engendered partnership, the AFRAA boss noted that the deal was most desired, as promoting safety is top priority for AFRAA. He also divulged that a higher safety performance on the continent can only be assured if the industry’s stakeholders factor in the following, with regards to their operations: cooperation within the framework of the Abuja Safety Targets; carrying out operations that comply with international best practices; having a formidable database ; frequently modernizing aircraft fleet and paying due attention to infrastructural safety.
In his own words, “We are excited to establish a framework of collaboration with Flight Safety Foundation that will enhance actions under the above five (05) pillars, and positively impact air transport’s contribution to Africa’s economic development”, he said.
On his part, Dr. Shahidi also expressed anticipation for getting down to the business of implementing the points in the MoU: “I look forward to collaborating with AFRAA; to work together to advance safety in Africa.”
