South African Airways (SAA), one of the oldest airlines in Africa has kicked off festivities to mark its 90th anniversary since commencing operations on February 1, 1934.

The festivities, which are ongoing worldwide at various destinations of the airline kicked off in Lagos with a movie reception and get-together in honour of its leading travel agents in the country.

According to the CEO of SAA Prof. John Lamola: “It is no secret that as part of South Africa’s history SAA has had more than its fair share of challenges, and of course, some tantalizing triumphs to be proud of. Today and throughout the month of February, we will celebrate and reflect on this heritage as we commit to taking the story of SAA as the leading world-class African airline forward.”

On her part, Mrs. Kemi Leke-Bamtefa, Country Manager for SAA in Lagos zeroed in on the travel agents in Nigeria; recognizing them for their support in contributing to the success of the airline over the years. In her own words:

“Today we are kicking off celebrations of the airline’s remarkable journey in the past ninety years by recognizing the brilliant contributions of the travel agents whose outstanding efforts have helped us in no small way to be as successful as we are today. They are at the center of our celebrations and we thank them for being the wind underneath our wings.”

As a testament to the successful, productive and mutually beneficial relationship SAA enjoys with its partners in Nigeria, Ms. Surline Isiagu, CEO of Luchia Travels shared her experience:“We’ve been in existence for about five years and we’ve been partnering with SAA throughout that time. As they celebrate their 90th anniversary, I pray that they continue growing in fleet size, in destinations; and that their business will continue to blossom. I am actually satisfied with SAA. I think they are one of the most responsive airlines because when you ask them for something, they are very quick to respond. I will continue patronizing SAA and I say more grease to their elbows. I wish them well,” she said.

Updates about the festivities which will continue to the end of February 2024 can be found on the company’s website at www.flysaa.com and on their various social media handles.
